In most facilities, even the smallest cranes involve the movement of tons of steel and equipment. Double girder gantry cranes, however, bring many tons of equipment into play. The larger and heavier the crane, the more potential for damage it has.

Even in the best of operational conditions, those using the crane must remain aware of its potential for harm to workers or damage to property.

To help our customers and clients enjoy safe use of their equipment, we have created a brief guide to crane safety.

Read the Manual and Obey Manufacturer Instructions

Whether operating a small gadget or a major investment in equipment, owners often feel the temptation to ignore some or even all of the instructions. The larger and more dangerous the piece of equipment is, however, the higher the stakes.

We recommend that facility staff read the instructions and conduct thorough training with every individual cleared to operate the crane.

Conduct Regular Inspections

OSHA requires at least an annual thorough inspection of industrial cranes. We recommend, however, that they take place more frequently.

Many facilities take no chances and perform a spot check of key crane elements once per day or even prior to each shift.

Also, make sure to keep up with recommended preventative maintenance. Breakdowns can cost in terms of injuries, broken materials, and work time lost.

Create Inspection Accountability Procedures

Putting together procedures provides a foundation for safe operation. Make sure that your operation has specific written guidelines for training and use. All supervisors and workers should have thorough knowledge. Sanctions for misuse may be necessary to lessen the risk of destructive accidents.

Know and Respect Equipment’s Limits

Each type of crane has its own set of limits. These include both weight limits and limits on how often the crane can operate in a given period of time. These are established to ensure that each crane operates within safe limits.

Operating beyond the limits set by the manufacturer can likely lead to equipment damage or even failure. This can also result in injuries.

Create Safe Zones Around Equipment

Cranes can have extensive fields of operation within a facility. Many workers, over time, will lose focus on safety issues and carelessly wander too close to work areas. Visitors also will likely have even less idea about which areas can be safely traversed where the crane works.

We recommend that you establish broad safety and travel zones that help people and equipment to maneuver safely in that area. Painted lines on the floor, signage, and barriers can all be used effectively.

Safety should remain your number one commitment when operating a crane. Let us show you how to use our cranes safely and efficiently.
