A crane at work.

When it’s time for your company to invest in a new indoor crane, it’s important to make sure you go about the process the right way. It’s a major expense that’s likely critical to many of your business’ operations and workplace productivity, and the process itself is likely to be somewhat disruptive to your employees and their responsibilities.

That’s why it’s essential that you do your due diligence ahead of time and plan intelligently for this kind of project. That means knowing what kind of crane is going to be appropriate for your needs, which service provider to trust with installing and inspecting the crane, and how to plan for the process itself.

T&M Cranes is an overhead crane service provider working with businesses in Griffith and other locations, and we know from experience that there are a lot of steps and pieces of this project to consider before getting started.

If you’d like to learn more about how to choose the right crane and service provider, as well as what you need to consider when planning for the project, keep reading through the rest of this post.

Choosing the right crane

It would, of course, be a tremendous waste of money to purchase a crane that isn’t actually suited to your workplace needs. To make sure you’re actually getting the proper crane for the kind of work you need it for, you need to consider the crane’s application and the types of cranes available for you to purchase.

Some points to consider in terms of how you’re using the crane include:

  • Humidity
  • Altitude
  • Temperature range
  • Frequency of outdoor usage
  • Exposure to corrosive or explosive substances

When choosing the type of crane you’d like to install, there are 3 main categories you’ll be choosing from:

  • Overhead cranes: These cranes move along bridges spanning a gap and are typically valued for their efficiency. Single girder overhead cranes are simpler, less expensive, and great for lifting anything under 15 tons and 65 feet, while double girder cranes are designed to handle more and ideal for when customization or special equipment are needed.
  • Gantry cranes: These cranes come in track-mounted, adjustable, or portable forms. Track-mounted gantry cranes allow you to move heavy loads along a fixed path. Adjustable gantry cranes are helpful for maneuvering loads around other objects or through tight spaces. Portable gantry cranes are best for when equipment needs to be moved for maintenance.
  • Jib cranes: When you need to move items within a smaller area, these cranes are a helpful and economical option. They come in column or wall-mounted form and can often fully rotate.

You can read about these and other crane types in greater detail here.

Choosing the right service provider

The next step is finding the right manufacturer and crane builder. When choosing one, you should look at:

  • References: See if anyone you know or trust has worked with a service provider you’re considering.
  • Partnerships: Find out about the service provider’s experience in the industry and partnerships with trusted manufacturers, which is indicative that they can provide timely repairs with reliable parts.
  • Certification: Verify the service provider’s certifications and expertise in the work they’ll be doing.
  • Full services: Find out if the provider offers a full suite of services, including inspections, replacements, and maintenance work.
  • Transparent planning: The provider should be clear with you about their schedule and methods for the installation and any additional work done as part of the project.
